Wikipedia has long been the place to look up information about all sorts of subjects. In 2012 Wikimedia (the organization behind Wikipedia) started Wikidata: a central storage for the structured data of its Wikimedia sister projects including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and others.

In this presentation, we will show how a legacy relational database, used for a successful business application is efficiently replaced by a new and sustainable model, using semantic web technologies and model driven database engineering.

Keeping taxonomies up to date is a labour-intensive and hence expensive endeavour. An obvious approach to save costs is to automate at least some of the manual tasks involved in maintenance. Vacancy text provides good insight into the language employers and HR professions currently use when describing job openings.

The creation of derivative data works, i.e. for purposes like content creation, service delivery or process automation, is often accompanied by legal uncertainty about usage rights and high costs in the clearance of licensing issues. The DALICC project aims to develop a software framework that supports the automated clearance of rights issues in the creation of derivative data works.

Discovering hidden facts in steadily growing and complex knowledge graphs is challenging. It‘s not that a proper SPARQL query can‘t retrieve valuable information. A mission critical task often is to get an idea of those queries and the graph. This becomes even more challenging when the underlying data or schema is not well known.

SKOS is a widely adopted W3C recommendation. It provides us with a standard way of expressing and exchanging concept schemes like taxonomies and thesauri. SKOS concept schemes are often managed in tools that provide a user-friendly way of managing these. Such tools typically have proprietary features, such as workflows, user management, audit trails, etc.
